The Best of the Tradition With a Heart for Evangelism and Discipleship
The Houston Saengerbund’s German Christmas Concert and Reception
Breathe in the magic of a traditional German Christmas celebration at First Evangelical Lutheran Church on Tuesday, December 5, at 7:30 pm., at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1311 Holman Street in Midtown.
The men and women of the Houston Saengerbund will present a free concert of traditional songs in German, carols from various countries, as well as selections from Handel’s Messiah. The audience will join in singing favorite carols.
Afterward, an elaborate reception will feature traditional German treats such as Lebkuchen, Spekulatius, and fat gingerbread men, along with a holiday punch and the famous “Feuerzangenbowle” - a traditional German alcoholic drink for which a rum-soaked sugar cone is set on fire which then drips into hot mulled wine. Beer and wine will also be available.
Flemish Ensemble to Debut
There is a new Renaissance choral ensemble in Houston! The group’s first concert will be on Saturday, December 16 at 7:30pm, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church. With about ten local professional singers, director Jeffrey Cooper (University of Notre Dame, University of Houston) says that he is excited to bring this great music to one of Houston's best venues for early music. The program will include seasonal music by early masters Josquin, Maistre Jhan, Sweelinck, de Wert, Victoria, and Praetorius. The concert is free of charge.
